Age: 19
Background Info: Wiki page here
Personality:
Since she was taken in by Dr. Kodo at a young age, Chizuru realized her wounds closed up quicker than anyone else’s. She has known she was different from others around her and has tried to balance her resilient faith in her people with a cautious distance from those same people. She’s a quiet person with discerning eyes, strangely naive to her own emotions and vulnerabilities but unable to leave others suffering in silence, a brave soul who will stand her ground no matter how many perils her curiosity and compassion lead her through. Her first name means a “Thousand Cranes” (and in Japan, a thousand paper cranes can grant a wish).
At the beginning of the canon, Chizuru is an independent child with a smile on her face. She’s not a needy girl and though, she can interact well with her neighbors, she begins the canon with no close friends. She’s largely self-reliant and can spend weeks in diligent work alone at her father’s clinic, keeping house when he’s traveling. She rarely bothers the people around her with her own problems, first small details in Edo and then later, the deepening worries from secrets of the Shinsengumi. Acutely aware of her secret identity every day of her life, Chizuru will usually take a humble approach to life, willing to bow her head and apologize for any trouble she may have caused. It’s easy to dismiss her as harmless. She’s been educated in polite gestures and good manners and takes the duty of being a woman in the house seriously. She enjoys household chores such as cooking and cleaning, and cherishes bringing just a little more comfort to others around her with her work. She’s always placing others before herself but seems content with that decision as long as harmony persists around her.
A doctor’s daughter, Chizuru grows up nurturing strong belief in the goodness of humanity, particularly those in the service of helping others, such as her father. Although rarely able to expand her horizons until she’s met the Shinsengumi, she has healer’s touch in her voice, a calm that makes it easy to speak to and confide in her. She’s terrible at lying or breaking rules because of the conflict these cause, but the threat of harm or loss of life is always enough to move her to action in spite of the problems with these approaches. She sees value in all life and hates violence but does not see her life as expendable.
Chizuru’s heart leads her through life. Unwilling to worry or hurt her father, Chizuru learns the art of the blade for self-protection, becoming skilled enough to earn the respect of Hajime Saito of the Shinsengumi. She learns books and medicine from her father and other medics to be able to protect and save others around her. If there is danger around her, her cautious gentle nature disappears, turning into emotion-driven courage and impulsive reactions. Although unwilling to die, she’s blind to the dangers she creates for herself in the service of protection for others, rarely flinching when wounded and selflessly throwing herself in between her friends and the demon from the North who wishes to steal her away. She doesn’t regret bearing difficult secrets, such as learning of Sojiro Okita’s tuberculosis and promising to keep the incurable illness from from his comrades to preserver his lifestyle.
Chizuru rarely feels any guilt if it is in the service of others, but it is a completely different thing when she is faced with her own weaknesses or failures. Chizuru usually seems content about her life, even carrying the secret of her identity upon her shoulders, until choices in her life come back to destroy the tranquility or happiness around her. The Water of Life, an elixir/drug perfected by her father in secret is a constant weight of sorrow on her mind. Even though she had knowledge of the Water of Life until she came to the Shinsengumi, she blames herself for the chaos and suffering it has caused all around her. If she had been a stronger physically or a better doctor, she may have been able to stop her friends from taking the drug to stay alive or stay true to their convictions. If she could control her emotions or express herself better, perhaps she could save her brother and father from their descent into madness on her behalf. Chizuru may be brave in the face of others’ pain and perils, but when set against her own worries and fears, she withdraws, shy and as helpless as any other girl, and she hates it. As much as the Shinsengumi have become a rowdy family for her, she stays with them to also atone for her family’s sins and constantly fights her grief on the matter. It’s a stain on her belief of humanity that never quite goes away.
Despite being aware of the conflict building in her country because of her father, Chizuru is completely unprepared for the darkness of the world that forced her father to research the Water of Life, its consequences on her family and friends, and the political cruelty that surrounds her friends. Her first exposures are harrowing, usually leaving her to be rescued by her blood or one of the Shinsengumi, but she’s willful enough to get up after. Although she balks at finding solutions to the tragedies around her, she’s stubborn enough to keep trying as long as she’s able. Her father is a practitioner of Western and Eastern medicine and has taught her the value of different approaches to life’s problems as well as the pursuit of knowledge itself. Although it is more often than not her heart that leads Chizuru into danger, just as often she realizes something is strange and investigates out of curiosity. She’s not afraid to search for the truth, even if the reasons are terrible. She wants to understand more.
As the war descends upon them all, life among the Shinsengumi changes and influences Chizuru’s character. Although still a quiet person, it becomes easier to speak up for herself if she can sense danger for her friends. She’s still incompetent at expressing her own needs and desires but tragedy has left its own mark on her. She’s not needy as in always craving attention or validation, but she does cling to the family or fellowships she’s created with the Shinsengumi. She needs a connection in this world that is not one forced upon her — one of her own making. She chose to name Dr. Kodo as her father despite her lack of blood connections and she chose to trust the Shinsengumi in spite of the secrets. Without them, she is lost and is nearly desperate to find them again. She is blind to the danger of that search but realistic in her fortunes, willing to go through any consequences to find her friends again — if only to see their final stand. She never does grow to understand the inherent cruelty in the world she’s being exposed to but chooses forgiveness and hope in spite of the war pressing around her. She’s a solemn light in the darkness.
Abilities and Inventory:
Chizuru is a full-blood Oni, but she does not have control of those powers, having denied this part of herself for most of her life until another Oni entered her life and war surrounded her friends. Oni have several different powers, no matter the clan they hail from. They have supernatural healing abilities, a transformation with white hair and small horns on their forehead, and their presence can be used as a barrier or wind to push others away. Kazama, another Oni, uses this to his advantage in battle; Chizuru uses this as a last resort, an instinctual power that emerges when she’s in danger of losing her life. Kazama is also inherently stronger and can move faster than the human eye in several ways, from reappearing behind his opponent to disappearing from the area completely. Chizuru is still developing these traits. She is hardy but no where near the level of someone who has used those abilities all their life. (But that may change in this game xD)
Her Oni blood can also break the craze of those who have become demons and lose control of their bloodlust, when they're on the verge of losing their humanity.
She carries two swords with her: A short sword, also known as a kodachi (her main weapon), and a full tang katana (the partner to her kodachi, and the last thing that remains of her brother after he lost control and he was killed). She is no sword master but is skilled enough with her kodachi to be allowed on the battlefield or patrols and to protect herself and earn the respect of the leaders of the squads. Her greatest weakness is freezing up when she’s overwhelmed emotionally.
Chizuru is a doctor in training and understands the medicine of her time well enough to receive instructions from a master and treat the worst disease of her time, aka tuberculosis. She can take care of the wounded and ill with ease. She understands the basics of western medicine and science, too.
Chizuru will appear in the dream sphere dressed as a man would in her world because that is the uniform she had worn while in the care of Shinsengumi these past years. Instead of a simple kimono and obi, she wears a man’s kimono paired with hakama for ease of movement and completing errands as well as hiding her true feminine nature. She is used to it and chose this before the Shinsengumi continued to use it for safety on the road while searching for her father.
Suitability and Plans:
I’ve been waiting to play Chizuru for a while but the first game planned for her fell through. She’s being waiting among my muses since then. She’s also a very different character from my first Dreamwidth muse, a broken bitter immortal, which will be a boon for me. Chizuru is a character that finds her strength in protecting others. She wants to take a more active role in saving her friends but is unable to stop their tragedy in the real world. Even if I am taking her before the complete end, she knows that the Shinsengumi are likely on a doomed path. However, in this world, she has a chance to make new friends and take the steps necessary to protect them. She has time and peace enough to explore her Oni side without always being saddened or ashamed of it. In canon, she rarely explores this side of herself but does sometimes wish she had more strength in order to stop the tragedies around her. The shame she carries about her Oni blood is more about the use of Oni blood as a terrible elixir and the conflict over her identity. The guilt and worry she carries about being different fade away when with the Shinsengumi, and I believe, in a different time, she would have faced that part of herself. Here, she can have that chance. In canon, you play a girl until she becomes a woman in love. In this RP, I hope to let the young woman blossom without the all restraints of that war and take her own path.
